6 Ways to Boost Your Immunity
It’s always important to incorporate ways to keep your immune system operating at optimum level. However during winter and with our busy lifestyles we can often be left feeling rundown which leaves us susceptible to illness. So here are 6 ways to boost your immunity.
Get Enough Sleep – Poor sleep quality is linked to a higher susceptibility to sickness. So make sure you get at least 7 hours of good quality sleep a night to help boost your immunity.
Book Yourself in For a Massage – I know I’m biased but research has shown that receiving regular massages helps boost your immunity. Massage boosts your lymphatic and circulatory system. Massage can also increase the level of lymphocytes (white blood cells) that help the immune system fight off diseases.
Eat More Whole Plant Foods – Whole plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes are packed with nutrients, fibre, and antioxidants. All these help to reduce inflammation in the body and contributes to a healthy gut microbiome.
Supplement if Needed – I always aim to get my vitamins and minerals from wholefood sources first. However sometimes in winter we might need an extra boost. Vitamins B, C, D, E, zinc and magnesium are essential to a strong immune system so try adding in more of these.
Regular Moderate Exercise – Prolonged, intense exercise can suppress your immune system, but regular, moderate exercise can give it a boost. Brisk walking, cycling, jogging or swimming are great examples of moderate exercise. This too will help reduce inflammation in the body and help immune cells regenerate regularly.
Reduce Stress and Anxiety – Not only can stress and anxiety cause inflammation in the body by raising cortisol levels. It also makes it harder to do any of the above, get enough sleep, eat healthily and stay active. What triggers stress and anxiety is different from person to person and so is what helps to reduce it. So maybe try a few things such as meditation, breathwork, colouring/painting, yoga, having a facial or massage and see what works for you.
